Alaska fishing- Two Rivers for the Price of One!
The Kenai River is really like fishing two rivers in one. The lower river is where the trophy King Salmon are caught. Twenty-foot Willie Predator powerboats are used to backtroll the river, pulling large plugs on rod and reel combos large enough to handle the giant fish that travel through this part of the river. These boats can comfortably handle four fishermen, a guide, and all the gear necessary for an action-packed day.
Three giant Kings landed on the Kenai during late May!
The King Salmon (also known as Chinook) that come into the Kenai River from the Cook Inlet and the Pacific Ocean are the largest in the world. The record king salmonwas caught on the Kenai and weighed in at over 97 pounds! Many of our guests catch fish in the 30- to 40- pound range, and 50- to 60-pound Kings are not unusual.
On the upper Kenai River, which winds from Kenai Lake through the Kenai National Wildlife Refuge, traditional Mackenzie-style riverboats are the norm. No motors are allowed in the Wildlife Refuge, but small outboard motors are used to reach our pick-up spot on Skilak Lake.
Sockeye and Silver Salmon make their way to the upper river to spawn, and in the middle of the runs the fishing can be fast and furious. The most often used technique is to backtroll from the driftboats, and there are frequent stops at favorite holes and beaches to cast from shore. The beautiful scenery of the Kenai River valley is an incredible backdrop as you enjoy a delicious picnic lunch on the riverbank.

Kenai River Information
If trophy trout are what you're after then the upper river is the place to be. Whether it's fly fishing or spin casting, the fish are here. The Alaska Department of Fish and Game has designated this stretch of the Kenai River as a "Trophy Rainbow Zone," and there are trout up to 20 pounds cruising in the turquoise waters.
